Hypertension and Exercise

Exercise and proper nutrition can help to ward off this silent killer. Nearly 25% of the population in the United States have high blood pressure. A new classification called prehypertension has been introduced to identify individuals who are at risk of developing this condition. The benefits of exercise have been promoted by a number of health organizations such as the American Heart Association, American College of Sports Medicine, and the CDC.

The combined effects of exercise, diet and weight loss; the value of exercise as a preventive measure of antihypertensive benefits are very positive. Most exercise recommendations for hypertensive patients suggest 20-60 minutes of low to moderate intesity cardiovascular training 3-5 days per week.

Cardiovascular training and weight training both show great benefits to lowering your blood pressure. Alternative exercises such as yoga can also help decrease blood pressure. Specific diet plans, decreasing your sodium intake along with exercise will be the best way to decrease your blood pressure.
